Action Required on Bill C-415 Earlier this year, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with its
local chamber network, worked at defeating Bill C-257 - there placement
workers bill. Another bill, Bill C-415 has been put forward as a private
member*s bill and we need your help again!
Private Member's Bill C-415, An Act to Amend the Canada Labour Code
(replacement workers) is currently being debated at the procedural level by
the House Committee on Procedure and House Affairs. The committee is
debating an appeal put forward by the bill's sponsor, Liberal MP Mario
Silva. Mr. Silva is appealing the ruling of the Subcommittee on Private
Members' Business that deemed the bill non-votable because it is
substantially similar to Bill C-257, which was already dealt with and
rejected at third reading earlier this year (you will recall that that
Canadian Chamber and local chambers of commerce across the country played an
active role in working to defeat this earlier bill). The House is currently on break until the week of May 28th and all Members
of Parliament have returned to their constituency offices until the House
resumes sitting. We urge you to use this break to contact the Liberal
leadership office to express concerns about Bill C-415 and the need to
defeat it at the procedural level.
We also encourage all members that have Liberal MPs in their local ridings
to contact them as well.
We have attached a template letter and a
backgrounder to be sent to the Liberal leadership and Liberal MPs. Please note, that while a letter writing campaign is effective, direct phone
calls or meetings while the MPs are back in their constituency offices this
week, may be the most effective means of communication regarding this
important issue. Below is the contact information for the Liberal leadership
office. The Honourable Stephane Dion

Saskatchewan Minimum Wage Review
The Minimum Wage Board in Saskatchewan is doing a review of the level of
the minimum wage. You have a chance to submit your comments.
As part of this review, the board will be examining the
appropriateness to the situation in Saskatchewan of tying the minimum wage
to an index. This could take the form of yearly increases tied to the level
of the consumer price index or Stats Canada’s low income cut-off.
Your views and comments regarding the indexation issue
can be emailed to:
minimumwageboard@lab.gov.sk.ca.
The closing date for submissions is May 31, 2007. If
you have questions call the toll free line 1-877-646-9243.
