Student Work Placement & Work Integrated Learning Options

The Lloydminster Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce our partnership in Magnet’s Student Work Placement Program (SWPP)

STUDENT WORK PLACEMENT PROGRAM

Employers may qualify for $7,000 of the wages for placement of underrepresented groups including women in STEM, indigenous students, newscomers, and persons with disabilities, as well as first-year students. Students in turn benefit with quality work experience so they can secure employment in their chosen fields of study.

What are the benefits of using it? SWPP is a tool that allows employers to make connections with student talent. For businesses and industries expecting waves of retirement in the near future, creating connections with students is an essential step in ensuring skill succession and a steady pipeline of talent. Thanks to the subsidies offered by SWPP and funder ESDC, employers can make those connections while saving costs.

Mentorship Opportunities

Mentoring In New Dimensions (MIND)

The “Mentoring in New Dimensions” (MIND) mentorship program pairs businesses with college students to provide real world advice and mentorship for what it is like to work in that field, and to build valuable network connections. The mentorship sessions will take place as a virtual fireside chat with the mentor and students.

*Please Note! The recruitment process is now closed.  We would like to thank all the leaders of our community who reached out to support this mentoring campaign!

The mentorship sessions will be organized as Zoom meetings.  Each program will have their own zoom meeting to introduce each business, followed by break out rooms for the students to ask questions.

We will be seeking business mentors in the following fields:

  • Appraisals
  • Marketing
  • Accounting
  • Small business/entrepreneurship
  • General Business

Are you interested in becoming a mentor?

  • The time commitment is low at 2.5 hours total. Mentors will provide 1.5 hours of time to hold a mentorship session.  An additional 1 hour of time saved for follow up questions or advice the students may seek.  Recommended for students to initiate conversations through email, at which point you may follow up with a phone call or meeting based on the mentor’s choice and availability.

What is a fireside chat?

A fireside chat is an informal yet structured conversation. It is a unique opportunity to uncover the speaker’s personal stories and ideas. It is designed to be a casual conversation where the students will have the opportunity to ask the mentors questions such as:

      • How did you get into this field?
      • What kind of education/training do you have?
      • What does a typical day/week in your job look like?
      • What are the future prospects in this field?
      • What are the trends you see developing over the next few years?

An Interview With…

An Interview With… introduces Grade 11 and 12 students to careers by having community members discuss a day in the life of their job, and the education and skills that are required for success in their career.

*Please Note! The recruitment process is now closed.  We would like to thank all the leaders of our community who reached out to support this mentoring campaign.

Please watch the High School Career Day videos below!

We are recruiting professionals who are interested in sharing their career story with grade 11 and 12 students from Lloydminster Public School Division, Lloydminster Catholic School Division and Onion Lake. Do you run a business? Work in trades? Health care? Technology?

The presentations will be zoom meeting interview recordings hosted by Serena Sjodin, Executive Director of the Lloydminster Chamber of Commerce. Following the interviews, interested students will have the opportunity to reach out to professionals for additional mentorship or questions.

  • Tell us about your job and what you do.
  • How did you get into this field?
  • What kind of education/training do you have?
  • What does a typical day/week in your job look like?
  • What are the future prospects in this field?
  • What are the trends you see developing over the next few years?

We expect each session with the professional to take approximately 15 minutes.
